How to Find The One (Makeup Artist) for Your Big Day
I have had to pleasure to speak with Camilla Collins of CJC Hair & Makeup who shared with me how to find the perfect makeup artist for your wedding.
Camilla has over 15 years experience in the world of bridal beauty her key words of wisdom was that: “Your wedding makeup isn’t just about how you look, it’s about how you feel. It’s the confidence when you see your reflection, the excitement as the final slick of gloss or lippy goes on, and the calm and contentment in knowing you’re in safe, expert hands.”
Below Camilla walks us through a few key things to look out for when choosing the right makeup artist for your big day to ensure you feel totally supported, stress-free, and stunning.
Start With Style Compatibility
Every makeup artist has a unique aesthetic—some love ultra-glam, others lean into soft, romantic finishes. Scroll through their Instagram, browse their portfolio, and ask yourself: Can I see myself in their work?
Look for real wedding galleries, not just editorial shoots. You want to see how their artistry holds up in natural light, on real skin… and after a few happy tears!
Ask the Right Questions
You’re not just booking a makeup artist—you’re inviting someone into one of the most intimate and significant days of your life. Ask:
Do you offer a bridal trial and what happens at them?
(Spoiler alert: You absolutely want one. More on that below.)How far in advance should I book?
The earlier the better. For summer Saturdays, 12-18 months in advance isn’t unusual! Can you work with my skin type, tone, or sensitivities?
A good artist will have the knowledge and the kit to accommodate.
Asking questions is a great way to test the relationship - you should feel heard and assured - your wedding day look should be a collaboration, not a one-size-fits-all service.
Why a Trial is Non-Negotiable
A bridal trial is where the magic happens. It’s your opportunity to:
See how your chosen look feels on you, and how it photographs.
Test longevity and comfort.
Tweak anything that doesn’t feel quite you.
I always recommend booking your trial 1-3 months before your wedding. It allows for tweaks, skin prep advice, and peace of mind. If you have a trial too far in advance you may end up changing your mind and if left too soon before the big day it can cause unnecessary stress about how you will look.
Trust the Timeline
One of the unsung roles of a great bridal hair and makeup team? Keeping things running smoothly.
At CJC Hair & Makeup, we create a personalised beauty schedule for every wedding day prep: factoring in bridesmaids, mums, flower girls, and time for touch-ups and photos. No clock-watching. No chaos. Just a relaxed, joyful lead-up to the aisle.
Can you Stay for Touch-Ups?
Some brides like their artist to stay through the ceremony and photos. Others prefer a custom touch-up kit with lipstick, blotting papers, and setting powder to carry in their clutch.
We offer both and will always guide you based on your day’s timings, venue, and comfort level.
Customised, Not Cookie-Cutter
Your makeup should reflect you. Whether you're going for boho, vintage, or classic elegance, we match your look to your style, dress, colour palette, and even your flowers. We are your creative partners in style and here to enhance your natural beauty and accentuate your best features - it’s not about trends it’s about YOU.
Final thoughts
Your wedding morning should be filled with calm, confidence, and lots of joy. With the right makeup artist, it will be. Look for someone who listens, understands your vision, and who you genuinely “vibe” with as well as who has the experience to deliver it flawlessly. Ask questions, trust your gut, and don’t settle for anything less than feeling like the best version of you.
